A Notary Public is a solicitor appointed by the Supreme Court with at least 5 years standing and a qualification in Notarial Practice. A Notary Public is often referred to as an ‘international Justice of the Peace’ because only a Notary Public can perform functions (detailed below) with documentation for overseas use. In comparison, a Justice of the Peace or general qualified solicitor is not permitted to perform these functions for documents being used internationally.
The duties most often performed by a Notary include:
- authenticating official, government, company and personal documents for overseas use and transactions;
- certifying true copies of documents;
- witnessing signatures to documents; and
- authenticating identity.
